Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Parkinson's Disease in Baku City

In order to assess the clinical and epidemiological features of Parkinson’s disease (PD) among the population of the city of Baku, documents of patients diagnosed with PD over 50 years of age were studied in outpatient clinics, and a comprehensive neurological examination was carried out. There is clearly expressed trend of growth in the incidence and prevalence of PD in Baku, the levels of which for 2010-2019 fluctuated in the range of 7.4-12.0 and 101.4-110.6 per 100,000 population, respectively. The disease is more common in men than in women. Comorbidity is typical for persons with PD (diabetes mellitus 23.5%; arterial hypertension 38.1%; coronary heart disease 9.6%; cerebrovascular diseases 6.5%). Transcranial ultrasound of the brain revealed changes in the substantia nigra in individuals with PD depending on the severity and stage of the disease. A correlation was found between morphometric parameters of the brain and clinical symptoms of the disease. According to our results, the indicators of general and primary incidence of PD in Baku are close to these indicators in the cities of Moscow and Smolensk. The change in the indicator from year to year is characterized by dynamic growth; there is a strong correlation between calendar years and the level of general morbidity.
