Magnet Resonance Imaging Findings and Differential Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system in young and middle-age adults and diagnosis is very complicated. According to the McDonald criteria for MS, the diagnosis requires objective evidence of lesions disseminated in time and space. In clinically isolated syndrome suggestive of MS to prove dissemination in time or space in order to fulfill the McDonald criteria, brain MRI is indicated. The diagnosis of MS requires demonstration of dissemination of lesions in space and time and elimination of more likely diagnoses with MRI of brain and spinal cord. Gadolinium is administered at the start of the examination.
