The Change of Static Balance Due to Age in Coxarthrosis Patients

Disturbances of balance and the associated falls in the ageing population are the common problems of the musculoskeletal system. The degenerative arthritis of the knee and hip joints are widely distributed in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of age on the static balance in patients with primary coxarthrosis. The permission obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Gazi University Medical School (GUMS) before the starting of the study. The inclusion and exclusion criterias were identified. The forty-six patients who needed conservative and surgical treatment for grade III-IV coxarthrosis were included in this investigation. The patients were informed about the study and were obtained in the form of a written authorization, after which they were involved in the study. The static balance assessment was done with 950-460 BioSway static balance device using different tests such as PST, LOS and CTSIB. The correlation between increasing age and static balance were assessed during statistical analysis. The statistical analysis showed static balance results were worsening due to the ageing process.
