Patent Foramen Ovale and Related Neurological Diseases

The anatomical closure of the foramen ovale valve occurs until the age of 2 years. In approximately 25% of people, a patent foramen ovale (PFO) persists into adulthood. Clinically significant PFOs are related with some neurological diseases such as cryptogenic stroke and migraine. This relationship necessitates close collaboration between cardiologists and neurologists. In this paper we aim to discuss diagnostic aspects of PFO, its role in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke and the evidence for PFO closure in cryptogenic stroke.
