The Prevalence and Incidence of Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue with a consequent increase in the fragility of bone and hence susceptibility to fracture. An osteoporotic fracture occurs as a result of fragility of the vertebrae. Acquaintance with the science of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures, new hypotheses, theories, classifications, variants, and its comparative analysis in people of different genetic backgrounds in different countries leads to a deeper understanding of the problem. Scientists from different countries of the world have made great contributions to the accurate study, systematization, classification, and epidemiology of pathology. Despite all this, the fact that a part of osteoporotic fractures is asymptomatic and the patients rarely consult a doctor (20-25%), makes it difficult to describe the clinical symptoms. Thus the incidence of vertebral fractures in the general population cannot be accurately determined. At the same time, there is no consensus of criteria for radiologically defining a vertebral fracture. Currently, although various etio-pathogenetic theories and epidemiological studies on osteoporotic fractures are classification options, no unified agreement has been reached on the problem.
