On the Issue of Predicting the Development of Epilepsy During Febrile Seizures in Children

Febrile seizures are a common disease in the practice of pediatric neurologists. Although most febrile seizures are benign and do not cause long-term complications, there is a potential risk of developing epilepsy, especially in children with certain risk factors. In this work, we tried to study possible risk factors and prediction of the development of epilepsy during febrile seizures in children. The main diagnostic criteria for including patients at risk for the development of epilepsy and prescribing planned anticonvulsant therapy are a high frequency of attacks with a focal component, an increase in the duration and severity of attacks with the patient’s age, and, in particular, the detection of epileptiform EEG activity (p=0.01) and structural changes in the brain during an MRI (p=0.05) in patients with febrile seizures, even with normal indicators of neurocognitive development.
